Uncommon Firefox Small Interface Tweaks

I have applied these quick Firefox tweaks on my laptop, and it makes a difference when especially I run my laptop in low power mode.

These tweaks make Firefox more responsive in specific situations that occur often for me.

Applies to Firefox 3.0 and 3.5. May work with other versions too.

  1. disable smooth scrolling if on (Options –> Advanced –> General –> Use Smooth Scrolling)
  2. disable full screen autohide animation (about:config in location bar –> “browser.fullscreen.animateUp” filter –> “0” value)
  3. disable text and image dragging (about:config in location bar –> “nglayout.enable_drag_images” filter –> “false” value)
  4. disable location bar fading transistion, since Firefox 3 (about:config in location bar –> “browser.urlbar.animateBlend” filter –> “false” value)

I don’t really take credit for these tweaks. You can find a whole bunch more here if you are looking to go all out:

Firefox 3.5 RC testing

I’ve been using Firefox for a long time now, falling in love with its various addons and it’s speed. It has become a part of my routine.

Every new version of Firefox thus far has been a good experience. In particular, Firefox 3.5 refines what is already a very polished browser and has made it more efficient than before without sacrificing compatibility.

My main likes of Firefox 3.5 RC so far:

  • better speed
  • more efficient memory usage
  • a very good private browsing mode
  • better interface when clearing private data
  • flawless profile upgrade from Firefox 3.0

The only thing that typically holds me back is the addon compatibility, but this addon developers have been prepared for this new version for a while now, and all my addons are compatible with the Firefox. I was not able to run Firefox 3.5 up till the b99 for this very reason (crash upon Firefox startup).

AMD Turion CPU Undervolt for your Laptop with Windows

It is now possible to undervolt your AMD Turion Processor under Windows Vista x32/x64 (even Windows 7). This should work for Windows XP as well.

This works if you have an AMD Turion CPU, GRIFFIN codename.

1. Reduce fan noise
2. Reduce CPU heat
3. Increase laptop battery life

1. Obtain PumaStateCtrl for your OS
2. Unpack and modify config.xml as per instructions in html help file
3. Save the config.xml file and run the .exe file.
4. Verify voltages and system stability.
5. (Optional) Run as executable as Automatic Service. Not shown in this video.

Personally tested to work on HP Tablet TX2524CA, RM-70 processor. Boots. Stability not thoroughly tested.
2GHz @ 1.0125V (from 1.075V)
1GHz @ 0.7625 V (from 0.950V)
.5GHz @ 0.750V (from 0.800V)

Prime 95 (via Majorgeeks):

Run PumaStateCtrl as a service in Windows Vista to retain settings upon standby/return from standby. The instructions of how to do this are located in the thread.

* 0.750V is the lowest voltage this program can undervolt to
* to run as service without the Service messagebox popup, make sure the service is not allowed to interact with your desktop when you create it.
